Building Careers in Care: From First Conversations to First Certificates

What began as a busy morning at the Health & Social Care Job Fair in St George’s Hotel, Llandudno, has turned into a real success story, with a group of local learners completing their training, forming strong friendships, and now preparing for interviews in the care sector.

Delivered in partnership between Ethical Workforce Solutions and Conwy Employment Hub, this fully funded Get Ready for Social Care course has opened doors to meaningful, rewarding careers, and shown the power of collaboration and community in action.

It all started at St George’s Hotel In Llandudno

The journey began when the Ethical Workforce Solutions team joined Conwy Employment Hub at the Job Fair to meet people looking to start a career in Health & Social Care. The room was full of energy, curiosity, and great conversations. By the end of the day, dozens had signed up for the next step, an enrolment day at the Ethical Workforce Solutions Colwyn Bay Training Centre.

The enrolment day brought everyone together for the first time. The Ethical Workforce Solutions team, Ash, Aled, Stu, Jane Green, Deborah Dawson, and also Alice Kirwan from Conwy Employment Hub welcomed a room full of eager learners ready to begin their training journey.

It was a warm and encouraging start, with learners discovering what to expect from the five-day course, meeting the trainers who would be guiding them, and hearing about the guaranteed employer interview waiting for them once training was complete.

The team made sure every learner felt supported, reassured and part of something bigger, a shared journey into care.

Learning in action

Throughout the week, learners took part in interactive sessions, from essential care skills to communication and teamwork.

Midway through, Carly from Home Instead Colwyn Bay visited to talk about what a career in care really looks like. She shared insights from her team, handed out information, and encouraged learners to apply for roles once they’d completed their training, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and real job opportunities.

Mock interviews and real insight

On the final day, learners took part in a mock group interview with Amelia, Care Home Manager at The Old Vicarage in Llangollen, joined by residents Sally and Robina. Together, they asked genuine interview questions, because in their care home, residents play a key part in choosing who joins the team.

It was a lively, memorable session full of laughter, empathy and insight. Sally and Robina enjoyed it so much they stayed to watch the moving and handling training and joined everyone for tea and biscuits afterwards.

Certificates, smiles and next steps

At the end of the week, learners came together to celebrate completing their training. Certificates were presented by the EWS team alongside Alice Kirwan from Conwy Employment Hub, with plenty of smiles, applause and pride all round.

There was a genuine sense of friendship and community among the group, everyone had supported one another throughout the week and shared in each other’s achievements. To celebrate, the learners were treated to a meal together at Wetherspoons, where they swapped numbers, shared stories, and talked about their next steps.

Before they left, the learners surprised the team with a thank-you card signed by everyone, expressing their gratitude for the training, support, and encouragement they’d received throughout the week. It was the perfect ending to a memorable and meaningful experience.

Now, many have interviews lined up with local employers, marking the start of a new chapter in their journey into care.

Stay tuned to see how they get on!
