Moving & Handling Courses – Various Options

We offer various Moving & Handling (People and Inanimate Object) course options suitable for staff at all levels within organisations.

Course Length. 3.5 hours (refresher) / 1 day (for brand new staff) / 2 days (All Wales Passport) or 3 days (Train the Trainer)

Specialist options also include:

  • Children and young people

Introduction

These courses are designed for those on annual update, support workers needing to upskill themselves in this area to support transition into care work or new care workers as part of their wider training package.

Where training is delivered in-house, it may be possible to use your organisation’s own equipment to ensure staff are taught on the items they will use daily.  We are happy to tailor your training to your specific needs and our training team will be happy to discuss your requirements.

Principles of safer handling
Legislation – including Health and Safety at Work Act, LOLER, PUWER
Levels of assistance
Moving and handling assessment
POSRA (Personal on the Spot Risk Assessment)
Introduction to Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA)
Loads in personal care
The mechanics of natural movement
Assist to stand and sit
Repositioning in a chair
Repositioning in a bed
Assisting into and out of bed
Slide sheets
Hoist and sling safety
Assisting a fallen person
Unsafe manoeuvres
Practical session using available equipment

EWS also operate the two-day All Wales Passport in which all learners will receive the necessary training requirements and booklet documents to fulfil the full Welsh scheme complete with signed-off Passport documentation. Please contact the team to discuss this in further detail.

Where a ‘Train the Trainer’ model is delivered, this will cover all the above areas, including specialist topics, over the three days.  Participants on this programme will need to have the skills and confidence to deliver training to their colleagues as there is a “teach back” session on day 3 where learners will prepare and deliver their own 15 minute session for the rest of the group.  All participants must be able to demonstrate their skills in this area in order to pass the assessment criteria of the whole course.

Course Outcomes

Successful completion of this training course will result in the award of a CPD accredited certificate covering all aspects of the above course contents.

Who will deliver this course and how is is accredited?

Trainers delivering the half-day, one day and two day All Wales Passport are up to date with their moving and handling practice via our internal clinical governance system.  The Train the Trainer option is delivered by our Training Director who has completed Trusted Assessor, 5 x day Train the Trainer, Single-Handed Care course and is a member of the National Back Exchange.  The Train the Trainer course is aligned to a Level 4 standard.
