This half-day Autism and LD Awareness & Support course is suitable for nurses and carers.

Course Length. 3.5 hours

Introduction

This half day course helps staff to identify Autistic Spectrum Disorders and LD, how they are diagnosed and how people with a condition can be supported effectively. A range of practical tips and techniques are explored and discussed as part of the learning.  Although there is no direct stipulation as to how the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Tier 3 (advanced care and support) must be delivered, this training is aligned with the OMMT and studies the subjects in more depth.

What is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder?
What is a Learning Disability?
Types of Learning Disability and their effects.
Possible causes of autism, including health, psychological, genetic and environmental factors
Possible Autistic behaviours, including challenging behaviour and social interaction impairments
How Autism is diagnosed
Autism Management
Supporting people with Autism, including practical tools and tips

Course Outcomes

Your staff will be equipped with all the relevant knowledge and an understanding of the various Autism and LD instances you may face within a care setting, and how to approach each.
