Introduction

This one day course gives learners the knowledge to help them to safely and effectively administer and manage medication in a care or support setting.

Understanding the regulatory requirements in regard to medications
Medication and drug interaction
Managing the legal categories of medicines
Types of prescriptions and their risk assessment and management
Pharmacy medication labels and transcribing
The laws regarding the administration and management of medicines
Ensuring staff understand administration directions
Liquid medications (storage, management and safe administration)
Policies for administration
Avoidance of double dispensing
Drug crushing and covert medication procedures, legal and medical implications
Systemic and topical medicines therapeutic windows
Infection control considerations for both carers and service users
Management and usage of non-prescription medicines including herbal
Implementing the 7 rights of administration
Practical guidance and training for staff on the giving of medicines, including Oral, Transdermal patches, Inhalers, Eye/ear drops and ointments, Topical (skin)
Awareness of administration via other routes, including the requirement and sourcing of specific training
Delegated nursing tasks
M.A.R.R. sheets, accurate record keeping
Sector specific management of controlled drugs
Maintenance of medication supplies and procedures for emergency supplies and interims
Disposal of unwanted / spoilt medication
Managing and recording instructions for the alteration of doses
Storage management
Side effects and drug interaction
Promoting self-administration and assessing the levels and methods of assistance
Medication audits and checks
The CQC “questions” regarding medications

Course Outcomes
